The positive cardiovascular outcomes for Tirzepatide are likely to boost demand and sales for Eli Lilly, reinforcing its strong market position in the GLP-1 drug class. The study's findings may also increase pressure on competitors and influence prescribing patterns, benefiting Eli Lilly's revenue growth.

A new US study published in The BMJ found that Tirzepatide (tirzepatide), a GLP-1 receptor agonist used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, significantly reduces the risk of heart attacks in patients with type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The study followed nearly 53,000 patients who started treatment with either Tirzepatide or sitagliptin, another diabetes medication. After one year, the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) was 2.9% for Tirzepatide users versus 4.4% for sitagliptin users, representing a 33% reduction in heart attack risk. The drug also reduced hospital admissions due to infections and deaths from any cause. Tirzepatide is manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company, which reported first-half 2026 sales of £13.8 billion, a 106% increase year-over-year. The drug is already prescribed on the UK's United Kingdom — National Health Service for type 2 diabetes and severe obesity. Separately, the UK's United Kingdom — Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has received reports of hair loss linked to tirzepatide and semaglutide, and a University of Pennsylvania Health System study noted a potential link between GLP-1 drugs and hair loss.
