The programme is expected to boost agricultural productivity and farmers' incomes in Nigeria, potentially increasing output of crops like sesame, rice, and soybean, which could enhance export earnings. The loan scheme provides a new financing model for smallholder farmers, supporting the agricultural sector and contributing to food security, with positive implications for the Nigerian economy.
The Agricultural Bank of China (BOA), in partnership with WACOT Limited, has commenced the distribution of farm inputs to smallholder farmers in Nigeria — Jigawa State under the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Smallholder Farmer Support and Value Chain Programme. The initiative aims to enhance food security, increase crop yields, and improve farmers' incomes by providing improved seeds, fertilisers, agrochemicals, technical support, and guaranteed off-take opportunities. The programme is structured as a loan facility with a single-digit interest rate of nine per cent, disbursed through accredited farmer aggregation companies such as WACOT Limited. Nationwide, the intervention is expected to support over two million smallholder farmers across more than 20 states, with over one-third of beneficiaries being women. In the current farming season, about 200,000 farmers will benefit, rising to 500,000 by the dry season. Each input package is valued at about N500,000, and farmers are projected to earn about N1.5 million at the end of the season. The programme also plans to expand irrigation support to enable year-round farming. The initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, and the Nigeria — Jigawa State Government under Governor Umar Namadi has been commended for prioritising agricultural development.
