Supreme Court denies Asaram interim bail

On August 6, 2026, the India — Supreme Court of India declined to grant interim bail to self-styled godman Asaram, who is serving a life sentence for the 2013 sexual assault of a minor. The court, however, permitted him to engage a trained caretaker of his choice for round-the-clock assistance, based on an AIIMS medical report stating that while hospitalisation was not required, continuous medical assistance was needed. The bench of Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale kept the bail plea pending and allowed Asaram to mention the case again if his health deteriorates. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta alleged that Asaram had suppressed the fact that he had sought parole, which had been granted by the India — Rajasthan High Court. The AIIMS report was submitted pursuant to a July 21 Supreme Court direction for a medical board assessment. Asaram's conviction and life sentence were upheld by the India — Rajasthan High Court on May 27, 2026, and his appeal is pending before the Supreme Court.
