Researchers at IIT Guwahati have developed a portable optical sensing device named E-Eye that can instantly detect multiple toxicants in water and other biological samples. The device detects heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, iron, chromium, fluoride, and Escherichia coli bacteria. It operates on the Beer-Lambert law, combining optical sensing with digital electronics to generate quantitative measurements. E-Eye costs approximately Rs 3,500, with a per-sample testing cost of around Rs 2, making it affordable for field deployment. The research, published in Sensors (journal), was led by Prof. Tapas K. Mandal and Prof. Harshal B. Nemade, along with research scholars Hemant Kashyap, Smriti Sachan, Neha Majee, Maitrayee Bhuyan, and Humayun Kabir. The team tested over 2,700 samples with results comparable to standard laboratory instruments. The project received a grant from India — Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the team established a startup, Envionix Labs, to commercialize the technology. The device aligns with the India — India's Jal Jeevan Mission and can support agencies under India — Ministry of Jal Shakti. Future plans include integrating solar panels and cloud connectivity.
