Ladakh launches high-altitude wildlife safari

India — Ladakh, a Union Territory of India, is set to launch the country's first high-altitude wildlife safari, approved by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. The initiative, overseen by the newly constituted Snow Leopard and High-Altitude Nature (SHAN) Conservation Society, will introduce guided jeep safaris along snow leopard and birdwatching trails, modeled on safaris in Kaziranga and Ranthambore national parks. The program aims to curb illegal off-roading, promote sustainable eco-tourism, and involve local communities as equal partners in conservation and economic development. The forest department will identify routes across India — Hemis National Park, Changthang and Karakoram wildlife sanctuaries, and other wildlife-rich areas. Additional measures include training 20 local youths in birdwatching, establishing 10 birdwatching hides, installing waste bins, launching a plastic-free tourism campaign, and creating wildlife clubs in schools. India — Ladakh hosts India's largest snow leopard population (477 of 718) and significant biodiversity. The SHAN society, constituted on June 16, will develop a roadmap for community-led conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
