In July 2026, India's coal supply for the power sector remained comfortable, with total available stocks of approximately 148 million tonnes (MT), sufficient for about 62 days of consumption. Coal production rose 7.51% year-on-year to 69.75 MT, while despatch surged 18.03% to 86.85 MT. Receipts at thermal power plants grew 13.41% to 68.83 MT. As of August 4, 2026, coal stock at thermal power plants stood at 34.55 MT, with an additional 113 MT at pitheads and in transit. The India — Ministry of Coal attributed the healthy supply to robust production, despatch, and receipts, supported by India — Indian Railways, and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted coal availability for the power sector, aligning with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat.
