Greece West Nile virus outbreak 2026

Greece is experiencing a significant outbreak of West Nile virus during the 2026 transmission season. As of August 5, 2026, the Greece — Hellenic National Public Health Organisation (EODY) has reported 65 locally acquired cases, with 23 new cases in the past week. Of these, 54 patients developed central nervous system complications including encephalitis, meningitis, and acute flaccid paralysis, while 11 had milder symptoms. Six deaths have been recorded, all among patients over 65 with CNS complications; the median age of the deceased is 79. Twenty patients remain hospitalized, including eight in intensive care and four in high-dependency units. Cases have been identified in 25 municipalities across 10 regional units in Greece — Attica, Greece — Thessaly, and Greece — Central Macedonia. Greece — Attica, particularly the eastern part including municipalities like Spata-Artemida, Markopoulo Mesogaias, and Pallini, has seen intense transmission. EODY has designated additional high-risk areas and expects further cases in coming weeks. The organization emphasizes mosquito control and personal protective measures.
