Former Member of Parliament for Gazipur-5, Akhtaruzzaman, was arrested by the Detective Branch of Bangladesh — Dhaka Metropolitan Police on 5 August 2026 from a residence in Gulshan, Dhaka, in connection with an anti-terrorism case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Bangladesh — Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station. The case stems from an incident on 18 June 2026, when 35-40 leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh — Awami League and Bangladesh — Bangladesh Chhatra League, including Nibas Majumdar, allegedly brought out a procession near Mohakhali Bus Terminal, chanted anti-government slogans, and detonated cocktail bombs, creating public panic. On 6 August, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain sent Akhtaruzzaman to jail after the remand hearing was deferred due to unavailability of case documents. On 10 August, Magistrate Ariful Islam granted a three-day remand to allow police to interrogate him, identify other absconding suspects, and trace the source of the explosive devices.
