Dangote Petroleum Refinery's sustained dominance in European jet fuel supply reshapes Atlantic Basin trade flows, potentially pressuring US and Middle Eastern refiners' market share. This strengthens Nigeria's export revenues and reinforces Dangote's competitive position, while European buyers gain a reliable alternative amid geopolitical uncertainties.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has become Europe's largest supplier of imported jet fuel for the second consecutive month, according to data from Kpler. In July, the refinery delivered over 400,000 tonnes of jet fuel to Europe, accounting for about 20% of the continent's total jet fuel imports of 2.06 million tonnes. This follows a record 466,000 tonnes exported in June, when Nigeria first displaced the United States as the region's leading supplier. The refinery's strategic location on Nigeria's Atlantic coast, large scale, and modern technology have enabled it to compete effectively with traditional suppliers from the US, Middle East, and Asia. Production has been rising, with jet fuel loadings at the Lekki terminal reaching a record 550,000 tonnes in June and crude deliveries hitting an all-time high of 660,000 barrels per day. The company, led by CEO David Bird, is also expanding exports of diesel, gasoline, and other refined products, strengthening Nigeria's position as a net exporter of high-value petroleum products. Market disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and geopolitical dynamics have encouraged European buyers to diversify supply sources, benefiting Dangote.
