Kogi reprisal killings in Kupa Kingdom

In early August 2026, communal violence erupted in United Kingdom, Nigeria — Lokoja Local Government Area, Nigeria — Kogi State, Nigeria. According to preliminary reports, an unarmed herder was allegedly shot and killed by a member of a local vigilante group on suspicion of cattle rustling. This triggered a reprisal attack by armed persons targeting residents of Abugi, Kuchinda, and Mikugi communities, resulting in multiple deaths and heightened tension. The Nigeria — Kogi State Government, led by Governor Ahmed Ali, condemned both the killing and the reprisal, describing them as tragic, senseless, and unacceptable. Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, announced that security agencies have been directed to arrest the vigilante member responsible for the herder's death, as well as those behind the reprisal, including the leader of the Hybrid Vigilante Group suspected of coordinating the assault.
