Nigeria's re-entry into the World Energy Council is expected to boost investor confidence in its energy sector by providing a platform for policy dialogue and international partnerships. This could attract capital for gas development, electricity expansion, and broader energy reforms, positively impacting Nigerian energy companies and the broader economy.
Nigeria has formally rejoined the World Energy Council (WEC) as its newest National Member Committee, with the inauguration of WEC Nigeria and a new Governing Board. The board is chaired by Abdulrazaq Isa, co-founder and chairman of Waltersmith Petroman Oil Limited, with Bala Wunti, former Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC, as inaugural CEO. Other board members include Wumi Iledare, Mustapha Abdullahi, Aisha Farida Katagum, Ainojie Irune, Emmanuel Okon, Victor Ekpenyong, and Imamuddeen Talba. President Bola Tinubu welcomed the admission, describing it as a proud moment and a vote of confidence in Nigeria's energy reforms. WEC Secretary General Jonathan Wilkinson noted Nigeria's significant leadership role and its participation ahead of the Riyadh Air World Energy Congress in April 2027. The membership is expected to strengthen Nigeria's influence in global energy policy, attract investment, and support reforms in energy security, equity, and sustainability.
