Antarctic midwinter medical rescue

On July 31, an Australian air crew operating an Airbus A319 Long Range aircraft, call sign Snowbird 1, flew from Hobart, Australia to McMurdo Station in Antarctica in response to an urgent request for assistance. The flight, operated by Skytraders under contract to the Australia — Australian Antarctic Division, landed at Phoenix Airfield in darkness and extreme cold (minus 43 C). The American patient was flown the same day to Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand, where they were admitted in serious condition. The mission was described as rare and complex, conducted in the depths of Antarctic winter with minimal light and extreme temperatures. The copilot noted conditions were close to the aircraft's limits. The patient continued to receive treatment in Christchurch.
