The expansion of green ammonia supply is expected to boost India's domestic green hydrogen industry, benefiting companies like ACME Cleantech, SJVN — SJVN Green Energy, Larsen & Toubro, and others involved in production. It may reduce India's fertilizer import dependence and support the country's decarbonization goals, potentially attracting investment in renewable energy and green hydrogen projects.

Fertilizers Renewable Energy Chemicals

India's state-owned India — Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) announced plans to supply an additional 1 million metric tons of domestically produced green ammonia annually to fertilizer makers, following earlier offtake agreements for 724,000 tons signed in March with companies including ACME Cleantech and SJVN — SJVN Green Energy. This initiative aims to reduce India's reliance on imported fertilizers and grey hydrogen, which is currently used in large quantities by the fertilizer sector. The move is part of India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, backed by $2.1 billion in incentives, targeting 5 million tons of green hydrogen production by 2030. SECI's managing director Akash Tripathi stated that the new supply would be allocated through tenders, and the agency is also preparing green methanol tenders for domestic use. The push comes as India has reduced green hydrogen production costs to around $3 per kilogram, down from $5 in 2023, and as geopolitical disruptions, such as the Iran war, have highlighted the need for energy security.
