Osun governorship election security assurance

Ahead of the August 15, 2026 Nigeria — Osun State governorship election, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu met with civil society organizations in Abuja to discuss election security. Disu assured that the Nigeria — Nigeria Police Force would remain professional, apolitical, and impartial, with no preferred candidate or party. He outlined comprehensive security arrangements, including deployment of personnel and operational assets, intensified intelligence gathering, and coordination with the Nigeria — Independent National Electoral Commission and the Nigeria — Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security. He warned that electoral offenses such as vote buying, intimidation, and ballot box snatching would be dealt with according to law. Civil society groups, led by Auwal Rafsanjani of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, presented recommendations on voter protection, political violence, misinformation, and participation of vulnerable groups. Samson Itodo of Yiaga Africa highlighted the election's significance as a precursor to the 2027 general elections and stressed the importance of police neutrality.
