NIA chargesheet in cross-border train bomb plot

The India — National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a chargesheet on Friday before the NIA special court in India — Mohali against two accused in a cross-border terror conspiracy. The chargesheet names Shubham Kumar, who is arrested, and Jasvir Chaudhary, who is absconding. The case originated from the arrest of Kumar in February 2026 by the India — State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), India — Amritsar, who was found with a live IED, a remote-control device, a foreign-made .30 bore pistol, 20 live cartridges, a mobile phone, and heroin. The NIA took over the investigation in March 2026 and uncovered a conspiracy involving a Pakistan-based handler and associates in India to procure arms, explosives, and narcotics through cross-border channels. Kumar was allegedly tasked with planting a timer-activated IED on a passenger train to cause casualties. The broader conspiracy allegedly targeted multiple locations in India — Punjab, India and India — Delhi. The accused are charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Explosive Substances Act, Arms Act, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and Railways Act. The NIA stated it has gathered substantial oral, documentary, and digital evidence, and the investigation continues to identify other network members and trace smuggling routes.
