The restitution reinforces the EFCC's enforcement role in financial crimes, potentially deterring fraudulent real estate transactions in Nigeria. It may slightly boost confidence in the legal system's ability to recover funds, but the impact on broader markets is minimal.
The Nigeria — Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) handed over N125 million recovered from an alleged land fraud suspect to Lagos businessman Akinsewa Akiode. The funds were returned via Sterling Bank drafts on Thursday, following an investigation into a petition filed by Akiode. Akiode alleged that Olufemi Fashehun collected N125 million for the sale of a 550-square-metre parcel of land at No. 10, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Lagos, but concealed that the property had been subject to litigation since 2011. The EFCC investigation confirmed that Fashehun had been served with court processes, including injunctions, but failed to disclose the pending litigation. Akiode lost both the property and structures under construction. The EFCC recovered the full amount and made restitution. The handover is part of a series of recoveries by the agency, including a recent N108 million restitution involving Greenwich Planet Sun King Nigeria Limited. The EFCC did not state whether criminal charges have been filed against Fashehun.
