Delhi Cabinet Approves Private Universities Bill

The India — Delhi Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approved a draft Bill for the establishment and incorporation of private universities in the National Capital Territory. The Bill reserves 25% of seats in every programme for India — Delhi students, with fee concessions on a merit-cum-means basis. It allows modern multi-storey urban campuses instead of traditional large land-based campuses, addressing India — Delhi's land constraints. The Bill establishes a India — Delhi Private Universities Regulatory Authority to oversee standards, admissions, examinations, and governance. It also creates a pathway for internationally reputed institutions to set up in India — Delhi. The proposed universities will be self-financed and will not receive regular government grants. The Bill will now be introduced in the Odisha — Odisha Legislative Assembly during the Monsoon Session. Education Minister Ashish Sood framed the Bill as correcting a longstanding anomaly, aiming to make India — Delhi the Knowledge Capital of India. The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020.
