Sphamandla Mdletshe was sentenced to 10 years' direct imprisonment by the South Africa — Richards Bay Regional Court after pleading guilty to the theft of minerals worth an estimated R26 million from Richards Bay Minerals. The theft was uncovered in March 2024 when police found an abandoned truck loaded with zircon in KwaMbonambi, leading to the discovery of about 500 bags of zircon, chlorine and other minerals at a property in Isipingo, Durban. Mdletshe was arrested in the South Africa — North West (South African province) in August 2025 after evading arrest for nearly a year. He was part of a criminal syndicate; 11 suspects were arrested and charged with theft of minerals, money laundering and racketeering. The case against the remaining accused has been postponed to August 27, 2026. Acting National Commissioner of the South Africa — South African Police Service, Puleng Dimpane, welcomed the sentence as a milestone in the fight against organised crime and mineral theft.
