South Africa migrant exodus crackdown

More than 178,000 African immigrants have left South Africa in recent months, driven by a government crackdown on undocumented migration and sometimes violent anti-immigration protests. The exodus is one of the most significant from Africa's most advanced economy in years. Over 115,000 returned to Zimbabwe and more than 56,000 to Malawi, with Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, and Lesotho each reporting over 1,000 returns. The returns include both deportations (about 19,000 since April) and voluntary repatriations. Anti-immigrant protests culminated in nationwide demonstrations on June 30, which groups called a 'deadline' for undocumented migrants to leave. Mobs have conducted door-to-door campaigns, with reports of attacks and property burning. Mozambique reported 11 citizens killed, and Nigeria and Ghana also reported deaths, though South Africa disputes these figures. The situation has caused diplomatic tensions, with Ghana attempting to raise the issue at an African Union meeting, which South Africa blocked. UNICEF and the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child expressed concern for children affected, with thousands of children returning. Health officials fear interrupted HIV treatment, and Médecins Sans Frontières set up clinic tents at Zimbabwe's Beitbridge border post. South African authorities continue the crackdown, with about 3,000 people awaiting deportation and 6,300 inspectors deployed. President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned violence but acknowledged enforcement failures and promised border security improvements.
