India launches E-Samudra maritime platform

On August 8, 2026, India launched E-Samudra, a comprehensive digital platform integrating maritime services for seafarers, shipping companies, ports, and other stakeholders. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the platform in Mumbai during a national stakeholder interaction organized by the India — Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA). The platform aims to digitize maritime governance, offering online payments, real-time tracking, and digitally issued certificates, transitioning from physical office-based administration to a digital-first, faceless model. Alongside E-Samudra, DGMA showcased initiatives including the e-NAVIK 24x7 grievance redressal system, Seafarer Tracking Dashboard, Digital Seafarers Employment Agreement (d-SEA), and enhanced welfare measures under the Seafarers Welfare Fund Society. India, now the second-largest supplier of seafarers globally, targets becoming the largest, with its active seafarer workforce growing from about 103,000 in 2013 to over 323,000 in 2025. The event also highlighted DGMA's response to recent geopolitical disruptions, having monitored over 16,000 calls, handled over 40,000 communications, and coordinated the safe repatriation of more than 4,000 stranded Indian seafarers with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions, the India — Indian Navy, and shipowners. Welfare initiatives such as Sagar Mein Yog and Sagar Mein Samman were also highlighted, reflecting increased inclusivity for women seafarers.
