Tribunal Reforms Bill and Nicobar Project

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh urged the India — National Green Tribunal (NGT) to make public the report of the High-Powered Committee that reviewed environmental approvals for the India — Great Nicobar Island Project, which he called 'ecologically disastrous'. The report was submitted in a sealed cover on July 8, 2025. Ramesh's call comes as the India — Lok Sabha is set to consider the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026, which aims to implement the India — Supreme Court of India's directions in the Madras Bar Association judgment of November 19, 2025. That judgment struck down key provisions of the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021 and called for an independent India — National Tribunals Commission to oversee appointments. The Bill would establish the India — National Tribunals Commission and repeal the 2021 Act. Ramesh criticized the Modi government for resisting reforms and alleged that the NGT was targeted for being inconvenient. He also noted his past challenges to the Finance Act, 2017 and the 2021 Act in the Supreme Court.
