India demands Meta comply with local law

Government sources in India clarified that Meta Platforms must comply with Indian law, not just its global policies, following a series of meetings between Meta's technical team and officials from the India — Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The government emphasized zero tolerance for Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), demanding stronger proactive measures and concrete action. On deepfakes, officials called for a 'human-in-the-loop' mechanism to review content from verified handles before takedown, and raised concerns about synthetic content resurfacing after removal. The government also questioned Meta's recommendation and virality algorithms for amplifying unrelated or synthetic content. Officials denied directing a complete algorithm overhaul, but stressed the need for better local cultural and linguistic understanding. Further meetings are expected.
