AIIMS Delhi second dual kidney transplant

AIIMS-Delhi performed its second dual kidney transplant using organs from a marginal donor, a 70-year-old brain-dead woman, for a single 56-year-old recipient. The surgery, on July 28, involved transplanting both kidneys into the recipient's right side. Despite a cold ischemia time of about 12 hours, both kidneys functioned immediately, and the recipient was discharged after 10 days with normal kidney function. The organs were transported from Chandigarh to Delhi by an Army helicopter. The procedure was led by Dr Krishna and involved multidisciplinary teams from AIIMS, the India — Army Hospital (Research and Referral), and India — Command Hospital, Chandimandir. This dual kidney transplant strategy aims to expand the deceased-donor pool and maximize use of marginal donor organs.
