The joint venture strengthens Sony's position in the image sensor market and provides TSMC with a new growth avenue, likely boosting investor confidence in both companies. The collaboration is expected to enhance supply chain security for advanced sensors, positively impacting the semiconductor industry and related sectors.
Sony and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (TSMC) have agreed to form a joint venture, Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, to develop and manufacture next-generation image sensors in Japan — Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. The venture, with Sony as the controlling shareholder (60%) and TSMC holding 40%, will have a total capital of approximately 747 billion yen ($4.69 billion), with Sony contributing 465 billion yen and TSMC 282 billion yen. Mass production is expected to begin in 2029. The partnership combines Sony's image sensor design expertise with TSMC's advanced manufacturing capabilities, targeting applications in smartphones, automotive, and robotics. The companies are considering additional investment, assuming support from the Japan — Government of Japan. The venture will be based in Kumamoto, where TSMC already operates its Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (JASM) plant. This move supports Sony's asset-light strategy in sensors while securing TSMC's revenue growth. The announcement follows earlier reports of a larger investment of about 1 trillion yen ($6.3 billion).
