The surge in GeM's GMV signals robust adoption of digital public procurement in India, potentially boosting efficiency and transparency in government spending. This growth is likely to benefit MSEs and startups by expanding their market access, while also supporting the government's self-reliance agenda, which could have positive implications for the broader Indian economy.
The India — Government e-Marketplace (GeM), India's public procurement platform, reported a Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of over Rs 1.55 lakh crore for the current period, up from Rs 422 crore a decade ago. As of August 7, 2026, cumulative GMV since inception crossed Rs 20 lakh crore, with over 3.78 crore orders placed. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the platform's growth, noting that over 12.28 lakh Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), including more than 2.25 lakh women-led MSEs, and over 42,000 startups are registered. MSEs contributed over Rs 9 lakh crore in fulfilled orders, representing 45.6% of cumulative GMV. Women-led MSEs executed over 50 lakh orders worth over Rs 99,800 crore, while startups fulfilled orders totaling over Rs 65,900 crore. The GeM Sahay initiative, providing collateral-free working capital financing to MSEs, has registered over 25,000 users. The platform also supports regional sellers through over 600 product categories under the One District One Product (ODOP) GeM Bazar. Goyal emphasized that GeM has enhanced competition, improved price discovery, reduced procurement cycle times, and strengthened accountability through digital procurement, aligning with the government's 'Make in India' and 'Vocal for Local' initiatives.
