Supreme Court orders Manipur violence rehabilitation verification

The India — Supreme Court of India, in a hearing on August 10, 2026, addressed the ongoing rehabilitation and investigation of the 2023 India — Manipur ethnic violence. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. K. Mohanan, asked the Justice Gita Mittal-led committee to verify claims that around 24,000 affected families have not yet received government rehabilitation and welfare benefits. The court noted progress, including funds disbursed to over 4,000 of about 7,000 identified beneficiaries for house reconstruction, approval of more than 12,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, and release of Rs 51.95 crore for permanent houses. It also directed the India — Manipur and India — Assam governments to consider setting up two special trial courts to exclusively hear United States — Federal Bureau of Investigation and India — National Investigation Agency cases arising from the violence. The court ordered compilation of case details and status reports, and referred property-related applications to the committee. The violence, which began on May 3, 2023, has resulted in over 200 deaths and thousands displaced.
