The Nigeria — National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) announced that between January and August 2026 it secured more than 20 convictions for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) offences, including three life imprisonment sentences, and rescued over 3,000 victims. The agency, through its spokesman Vincent Adekoye, reported these figures in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. NAPTIP has expanded its response to SGBV by strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria — Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria — Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and relevant government ministries. It also inaugurated an SGBV Media Corps to promote responsible and investigative media coverage. The agency's efforts are supported by the European Union Support to End Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (ESGBV) Programme, implemented by International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance. NAPTIP emphasized the need for stronger prevention, community engagement, and victim-centred reporting to address the root causes of gender-based violence.
