CJ CheilJedang — CJ Biomaterials, a subsidiary of South Korean conglomerate CJ Group, is developing and producing polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) bioplastics made from fermented sugar. These plant-based polymers are designed to biodegrade in compost and marine environments, offering an alternative to traditional fossil-fuel-based plastics that fragment into persistent microplastics. The company operates a research lab in Woburn, Massachusetts, and a manufacturing facility in Pasuruan, Indonesia, producing compostable cutlery, straws, cups, and food packaging. Interest in bioplastics is growing due to concerns over microplastics, which have been found in oceans, air, food, and human tissues. The United States — Presidency of Donald Trump has stated it will address microplastic contamination. Bioplastics currently represent about 0.5% of global plastic production, with production projected to double by 2030. The Ifo Institute for Economic Research tested 22 items and found biodegradable materials broke down while traditional plastics persisted. Environmental groups like the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives argue bioplastics may distract from reducing plastic use, and some raise concerns about using farmland for plastic production. Adoption faces obstacles including higher costs and limited composting infrastructure.
