EU deploys expert mission for Nigeria 2027 elections

The European Union (EU) has clarified that it accepted an invitation from Nigeria's Nigeria — Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the 2027 general elections, contrary to press reports claiming it had declined. The EU will deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) of two to four independent experts, who will be accredited as observers. The EU denied that its decision was based on security concerns or hostile treatment of its observers, calling such reports 'pure speculations.' The EU has observed Nigerian elections since 2003, and its decision to send a smaller expert mission rather than a full observation mission reflects its annual assessment of country circumstances and resources. The EU also reaffirmed continued support for democratic governance in Nigeria through its funded programme.
