The Nigeria — Enugu State Government has commenced construction of three new 33KV electricity feeders from the Nigeria — Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) station at Ugwuaji, aimed at improving electricity supply to Nigeria — Nkanu East, Nigeria — Nkanu West, Nigeria — Awgu Local Government Area, and Nigeria — Aninri Local Government Areas. The project addresses the longstanding issues with the Amechi 33KV feeder, which spans over 600 kilometers and serves multiple areas, causing prolonged outages. The new feeders will be shorter, enabling faster fault detection and repairs, and will be complemented by four new injection substations to step down voltage from 33KV to 11KV. The state targets an average of over 20 hours of daily power supply for affected communities, some of which have been without electricity for over 20 years. The initiative is part of Governor Peter Mbah's broader plan to establish a modern electricity market, with the Nigeria — Rural Electrification Agency (ESEA) managing the investments and preparing for bulk electricity trading. The state is also preparing its distribution network to evacuate power from a proposed 630-megawatt generation facility, and plans to deploy smart prepaid meters and SCADA automation. The project is expected to extend to other areas like Nigeria — Nsukka and Nigeria — Uzo Uwani, supporting the state's economic growth target of increasing GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
