The deployment signals commercial viability of AEM electrolysis, potentially boosting investor confidence in Power-to-Hydrogen and its utility backers. It may accelerate adoption of cost-effective hydrogen production, positively impacting the clean energy and industrial gas sectors.

Hydrogen Clean Energy Industrial Gases

Power-to-Hydrogen (P2H2), a developer of anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer systems, announced on August 11, 2026, that it has delivered and begun installation of a first-of-a-kind half-megawatt AEM electrolyzer at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium. The system is the world's first to use 250-kilowatt AEM stacks and, once commissioned in September, will be the first AEM system to demonstrate renewable hydrogen production in a high-throughput industrial port environment under real operating conditions. This is P2H2's first commercial deployment of its M-Class hybrid AEM electrolyzers, which are designed to scale to 25 megawatts. The technology uses low-cost materials like steel and nickel instead of precious metals, potentially reducing capital expenditures by up to 65% compared to PEM electrolyzers. The project is expected to generate commercial revenue from its first year, with Germany — Holthausen as the key offtaker. It builds on P2H2's 2022 win of the Free Electrons innovation program, sponsored by utilities including American Electric Power, EDP, E.ON, ESB, Origin Energy, and CLP, several of which are now investors in P2H2. The deployment supports Europe's energy transition by enabling local renewable hydrogen production, enhancing energy sovereignty and supply security.
