Researchers at the University of Gothenburg and international collaborators published a study in JAMA Neurology identifying a panel of seven blood proteins, including p-tau217, that can improve the ability to stage Alzheimer's disease. Using machine learning on blood proteomics data from two independent international cohorts, the panel significantly improved prediction of advanced tau pathology in individuals with elevated amyloid plaques, offering a potential blood-based alternative to tau-PET imaging. The findings could enhance patient screening for treatment decisions and clinical trial recruitment, though further validation in diverse populations is needed.
