Nexteer Automotive, a global leader in steering and motion control, announced the introduction of its High Mount Direct Drive Steer-by-Wire Hand-Wheel Actuator (HMDD) on August 11, 2026. This compact actuator architecture is designed to help OEMs rethink steering system packaging and cockpit design for software-defined vehicles. HMDD combines a high-mount motor location, direct-drive responsiveness, and a stationary hub, enabling greater design freedom, premium steering feel, and scalable integration across vehicle platforms. It offers benefits such as flexible steering interface design, next-generation airbag integration, mass reduction of up to 23 percent compared to legacy column-based architectures, and support for 12V and 48V electrical systems.
