Researchers at the University of Liège, supported by the Alzheimer s Foundation of America, published a study in the journal Sleep linking frequent nocturnal micro-awakenings to a higher genetic risk of developing Alzheimer's disease in middle-aged adults. The study analyzed sleep patterns of over 500 healthy individuals, finding that among participants aged 50-69, those with higher polygenic risk scores for Alzheimer's experienced more micro-awakenings, while this association was absent in younger adults. The team also investigated the locus coeruleus, a brainstem region implicated in early Alzheimer's pathology, using a 7-Tesla MRI scanner. The findings suggest sleep analysis could become an accessible early marker for identifying vulnerable individuals, though the results are statistical associations and not yet predictive of individual disease. The research highlights the potential of sleep as a non-invasive screening tool and a possible target for preventive interventions.
