On August 11, 2026, the India — Indian Navy's second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), named Shruti, was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. The vessel, designated Yard 3037, was launched by Manika Sadhu, wife of Sanjay Vatsayan, Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition. The NGOPV programme involves 11 ships, with GRSE building four and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders — Goa Shipyard constructing others concurrently. Shruti is larger and more capable than previous patrol vessels, with a length of 113 meters, displacement of 3,000 tonnes, speed up to 23 knots, and endurance of 8,500 nautical miles. It will support maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and anti-piracy missions. The launch aligns with India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. GRSE plans to deliver five warships by the end of the financial year, including the stealth frigate Vindhyagiri and four ASW shallow water crafts. However, GRSE's CMD, Commodore PR Hari, expressed concern over dwindling naval orders, hoping for new contracts like the Next Generation Corvettes.
