The India — Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC), chaired by Justice Shameem Akther, recommended compensation totaling Rs 78 lakh to 18 victims of negligent cataract surgeries performed in 2018 at Jaya Hospital in Hanumakonda under the state's 'Kanti Velugu' programme. The Commission found gross medical negligence, including poor hygiene, sterilization failures, and lack of supervision, leading to severe Enterobacter cloacae eye infections, vision loss, and deaths. It recommended Rs 4 lakh each to 12 surviving victims and Rs 5 lakh each to families of six deceased, and ordered a detailed inquiry to fix responsibility on erring doctors and officials. The state government was directed to implement the recommendations and submit an action-taken report.
