A Pennsylvania State University study found that severe flooding in rural United States — Appalachia is associated with a long-term increase in opioid overdose deaths. Analyzing federal records from 2000 to 2017, the study compared 118 counties that experienced major floods with 101 that did not. Over the following decade, annual overdose deaths in flooded counties rose by about 28 percent, and mortality rates by 26 percent, with the effects most pronounced in economically distressed areas.
