The rollout of the National Payment Stack is expected to modernize Nigeria's payment infrastructure, enhancing efficiency, security, and interoperability, which could boost financial inclusion and cross-border trade. Banks and fintechs that integrate early may gain competitive advantages, while the eventual decommissioning of the legacy NIP system will require full industry compliance.

The Nigeria — Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) Plc has commenced the rollout of the National Payment Stack (NPS), a sovereign, ISO 20022-compliant digital infrastructure designed to succeed the legacy NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP) system. In its initial phase, the NPS has processed 26.55 million transactions valued at N1.4 trillion across 48 participating institutions. FirstBank of Nigeria leads in total transaction volume, while Fidelity Bank leads in total transaction value. Other early adopters include GTCO Group, Sterling Bank, Access Bank Group, and Moniepoint Inc.. The platform unifies payments, identity, and data onto a single intelligent rail, with multi-currency architecture supporting cross-border transactions. It introduces ISO 20022 data architecture, unified payment rails, embedded security and compliance features, and treasury precision capabilities. NIBSS CEO Premier Oiwoh described the NPS as an economic catalyst moving Nigeria's financial infrastructure from basic transaction processing to comprehensive payment intelligence. The Nigeria — Central Bank of Nigeria, through Director Rakiya Opemi Yusuf, has reaffirmed full regulatory support and urged financial institutions to accelerate integration. NIBSS plans to decommission the 15-year-old NIP rail after a seamless industry-wide transition.
