Fort Worth proposes Atatiana Jefferson settlement

The City of Fort Worth has proposed an $11.25 million settlement with the family of Killing of Atatiana Jefferson, who was fatally shot by former police officer Aaron Dean in 2019. The settlement would resolve all civil claims related to her death and is scheduled for consideration by the Fort Worth City Council on Aug. 25. If approved, it would also require probate court approval. Under the agreement, Jefferson's two minor nephews would receive a larger share, placed in trusts until they turn 18, with the remainder divided among surviving family members. This follows a separate $3.5 million settlement approved in 2023 for her nephew Zion Carr, who witnessed the shooting. Mayor Mattie Parker expressed hope for closure, while Jefferson's sister Ashley Carrick noted the rare accountability achieved both criminally and civilly. Aaron Dean was convicted of manslaughter and is serving prison time.
