A three-member Judges Inquiry Committee, constituted by India — Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, has found all three charges against former India — Delhi High Court and Pakistan — Islamabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma proved. The charges relate to the discovery of large quantities of burnt India — Indian rupee notes at his official residence in New Delhi following a fire on March 14, 2025. The committee, headed by Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar and including Justice Chandrashekhar Bawankule and senior advocate Bhargav Acharya, submitted its two-volume report to Speaker Om Birla in May 2026. The report was tabled in both the India — Lok Sabha and India — Rajya Sabha on August 12, 2026. The committee found that Varma failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the presence, source, or ownership of the cash, that material evidence was not preserved, and that his explanations were evasive and misleading. Varma had resigned on April 10, 2025, rendering removal proceedings infructuous, but his resignation has not yet been notified by the Nigeria — Ministry of Justice (Nigeria). The findings do not constitute a criminal conviction but represent a serious institutional finding against the former judge.
