The India — Ministry of Jal Shakti issued a notification on August 7, 2026, published in the Gazette on August 10, amending the River Ganga (Rejuvenation, Protection and Management) Authorities Order, 2016. The amendment redefines the 'active floodplain' of the Ganges and its tributaries as areas inundated during a one-in-five-year flood, and introduces two additional floodplain categories: a regulatory zone (between one-in-five and one-in-25-year floods) and a warning zone (between one-in-25 and one-in-100-year floods). The amendment removes the 'construction free zone' wording from the provision on maintenance of river banks and floodplains, replacing it with language requiring measures to reduce pollution and preserve groundwater recharge functions. The existing prohibition on construction in the active floodplain remains unchanged, but the notification does not specify construction rules for the new regulatory and warning zones. The order came into force upon publication.
