The launch of Tathyakosh is expected to enhance the efficiency of data discovery for researchers, startups, and developers in India, potentially accelerating AI and data-driven innovation. While the direct market impact is limited, it may improve the accessibility of public data, benefiting sectors reliant on data analytics and AI.
On August 12, 2026, the India — Karnataka government's Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, ACSEL Technology Forum, launched Tathyakosh.in, a digital public good designed to make India's fragmented public data ecosystem easier to discover, assess, and use. The platform indexes over 1.5 million datasets from 458 sources, covering 16 domains including health, agriculture, education, infrastructure, environment, economy, and governance. It draws data from 346 Indian sources and 37 international repositories, with historical coverage back to 1947. More than 92% of datasets are open access and 95% are machine-readable. Tathyakosh provides quality scores for each dataset across seven parameters to help users assess suitability for research or AI applications. It does not host datasets but directs users to original sources, preserving ownership and provenance. The platform includes over 50,000 India — Karnataka-specific datasets from sources such as the India — Karnataka Open Government Data Portal, Mahiti Kanaja, KSRSAC/K-GIS, Indian Institute of Science, and Raman Research Institute. IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge launched the platform at Vikas Soudha in Bengaluru, emphasizing its role in supporting India's AI ambitions by making data discoverable and structured. The platform is expected to support cross-sectoral policy research, data-driven applications, and AI development in healthcare, agriculture, climate, legal research, and financial inclusion.
