India advances green hydrogen leadership

India's green hydrogen push is expected to boost investment in renewable energy, electrolyser manufacturing, and green ammonia production, benefiting domestic companies and attracting foreign partnerships. The policy framework and international agreements could enhance India's export potential in clean energy, positively impacting related sectors and the broader economy.
India has emerged as a global leader in clean energy, with non-fossil fuel sources reaching 51.93% of installed power capacity by end-December 2025, surpassing the 50% target set in its second Nationally Determined Contribution. The country ranks fourth globally in total installed renewable energy capacity, according to IRENA's Renewable Energy Statistics 2025. Central to this transition is the India — National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production annually by 2030. Already, production capacity of 862,000 tonnes per year has been allocated to 18 companies, and 15 firms have been awarded 3,000 MW of annual electrolyser manufacturing capacity. Three green hydrogen hubs have been identified at India — Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat, India — V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority in Tamil Nadu, and India — Paradip Port in Odisha. The mission supports decarbonisation in hard-to-abate sectors such as fertilisers, petroleum refining, and steel, with pilot projects underway. India — Indian Railways has demonstrated hydrogen-fuelled trains. Internationally, India is leveraging Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, participating in the World Hydrogen Summit, expanding cooperation under the EU-India Trade and Technology Council, and engaging with the UK, Germany, and Japan on hydrogen standardisation, market mechanisms, and offtake agreements. These efforts position India to contribute to future clean energy trade and supply chains.
