Brazil suspends Discord livestreaming after teen suicide

Brazil's Brazil — National Data Protection Authority (Brazil) (ANPD) ordered Discord to suspend its livestreaming feature nationwide within three business days, citing failures to protect minors from content promoting violence, self-harm, and suicide. The order follows the death of a 13-year-old girl in central-western Brazil who died by suicide during a 45-minute livestream in July 2026, allegedly encouraged by members of an online group. Five teenagers and one adult have been arrested in connection with the case; police also rescued another girl who was about to attempt suicide on a livestream. The ANPD found 'robust evidence' that Discord failed to implement adequate safeguards for minors, noting that Discord cannot access livestream content in real time, limiting its ability to detect violations automatically. Discord has three business days to comply, ten business days to appeal, and could face fines of up to 50 million reais (about $9.67 million) per violation. The suspension remains until Discord demonstrates adequate protective measures for minors. Discord called the decision 'premature' and said it is cooperating with authorities. The move is part of Brazil's broader crackdown on tech platforms, following the 2024 block of X and similar actions against Telegram. It also coincides with Brazil's implementation of the Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents (Digital ECA) and ongoing EU scrutiny of ByteDance — TikTok Shop's child safety practices.
