The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has unveiled plans to establish 41 University Innovation Pods (UniPods) across tertiary institutions. The initiative, announced by Minister of Education Tunji Alausa during a meeting with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and seven vice chancellors, aims to transform research and innovation into jobs, investment, and sustainable economic growth. It aligns with President Bola Tinubu's vision of moving Nigeria from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy and building a $1 trillion economy. Eight UniPods have been commissioned or are ready for commissioning, with three already operational at the University of Lagos, Nasarawa State University, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. Specialized centers include Blue Economy, AgroTech, Resilience Tech, GovTech, and Industrial Tech. The MineTech UniPod at Nasarawa State University has developed geospatial maps identifying deposits of lithium, gold, and bauxite. The government, in partnership with UNDP and Tech4Dev, will establish the UniPods over the coming years, focusing on financial sustainability and commercialization. Minister of State for Education Suwaiba Said Ahmad emphasized the role of UniPods in accelerating industrialization, while UNDP Resident Representative Elsie Attafuah pledged support, including South-South cooperation with India.
