A study published in Human Reproduction found that vanillin, a common flavoring chemical in e-cigarettes, may disrupt the normal development of embryos in pregnant women who vape. Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, led by Prue Talbot and Shabnam Etemadi, exposed human embryonic stem cells to vanillin in the laboratory. They found that micromolar concentrations tended to kill the cells, while nanomolar concentrations caused the cells to lose pluripotency and differentiate into endoderm rather than ectoderm or mesoderm. The effect was mediated by the TRPV4 channel, as blocking it prevented the adverse changes. The researchers caution that the findings are from a laboratory study and cannot definitively establish the same effects in human embryos, but they suggest that women should be advised not to vape during pregnancy, especially if they are having trouble conceiving or have experienced miscarriages. They also call for regulatory agencies to consider mandatory ingredient disclosure on e-cigarette packaging and to assess prenatal exposure risks.
