The 2026 Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, caused by the rare Bundibugyo species, has recorded at least 4,300 cases and over 2,000 deaths since being officially declared on May 15. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that at its current pace, the outbreak could surpass the 2014-2016 West African epidemic, which killed over 11,000 people. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated the outbreak could 'eclipse' that record. The virus is believed to have been circulating since February, initially misdiagnosed as malaria or typhoid. Health workers are reaching only about 30% of cases due to regional instability in eastern DR Congo. No approved vaccine or therapeutic drugs exist for the Bundibugyo strain. The UK's United Kingdom — Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has authorized the first human trials of a vaccine developed by the University of Oxford, based on technology used in the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. Three other groups are developing vaccines, and the WHO is sponsoring trials of existing antiviral therapies.
