Antibiotic Duration Beliefs Survey

A national survey conducted by researchers at University of Utah and University of Alabama at Birmingham, published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases, found that nearly 90% of Americans still believe in the outdated mantra 'always finish your antibiotics.' The study surveyed 1,475 adults and found that about 60% would prefer a longer antibiotic course for pneumonia despite evidence that shorter courses are equally effective and safer. The findings highlight a need for better communication between clinicians and patients about antibiotic duration, as recommendations evolve based on growing evidence. The research was supported by the American Heart Association and internal funds.
