The announcement signals growing institutional adoption of Ethereum staking and DeFi, potentially boosting demand for ETH and Lido DAO's Wrapped Staked Ethereum. Sharplink Gaming's stock may see a modest positive reaction as it demonstrates a strategy to enhance treasury yields, though the company faces headwinds from recent losses and Ether price volatility.
Sharplink Gaming, a Nasdaq-listed digital asset treasury company and one of the largest corporate Ethereum holders, announced on August 13, 2026, that it will stake $200 million worth of Ethereum through Lido DAO, the largest liquid-staking protocol on Ethereum. The allocation, equivalent to roughly 106,000 ETH and about 12% of Sharplink Gaming's 888,938 ETH holdings, will be converted into wrapped staked ETH (Wrapped Staked Ethereum), a token representing staked ETH plus rewards, and held in custody with Anchorage Digital. This move expands Sharplink Gaming's existing staking and restaking strategy, which already includes native ETH, Liquid Collective's Liquid Staked Ethereum, and ether.fi's Wrapped Ether. By using Wrapped Staked Ethereum, Sharplink Gaming can earn staking yield while retaining liquidity and the ability to deploy the token across DeFi protocols. Lido DAO holds approximately $16.5 billion in staked ETH and its Wrapped Staked Ethereum is integrated across over 100 protocols with about $10 billion in active collateral. The announcement comes after a difficult quarter for Sharplink Gaming, which reported a $394 million net loss, including a $76.1 million noncash impairment on its Liquid Staked Ethereum and Wrapped Ether holdings, amid a 23% drop in Ether's price. CEO Joseph Chalom emphasized that Lido DAO's composability allows Sharplink Gaming to layer additional yield sources on top of its ETH exposure. The move reflects a broader trend of institutional treasuries seeking productive use of their crypto assets while maintaining liquidity.
