On August 13, 2026, a sudden inflow of water and debris flooded an under-construction tunnel of the THDC India Limited (THDC) at Pipalkoti in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, India. Around 20-22 workers were trapped inside. Rescue teams from NDRF, SDRF, CISF, ITBP, and the India — Indian Army were deployed. Nineteen workers were rescued and taken to District Hospital Gopeshwar, where seven were declared dead. Two workers remained trapped as of the latest reports. The tunnel was being constructed by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC). Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed relief efforts on a war footing and personally monitored the operation.
